Darren at The Audio Room
Darren is the Managing Director and founder of The Audio Room, which he established in September 1996. The idea for the business grew from his own frustrating experience when purchasing a hi-fi system - an encounter that left him determined to create a place where music lovers could receive honest advice, expert guidance and truly great sound.
His musical taste is as wide-ranging as the systems at The Audio Room, spanning the groove of Prince, the swagger of The Stone Roses, the power of Luciano Pavarotti and the energy of Arctic Monkeys.
His favourite test album is Sign o’ the Times by Prince. With its intricate layering, wide dynamics and huge sonic palette across multiple genres, it provides the perfect benchmark for assessing a system’s control, scale and musical insight.
Spencer at The Audio Room
Spencer joined The Audio Room full time in 2001, having previously helped Darren with many larger installations. Today he is an absolutely integral part of the business.
Advising customers and managing installations form a large part of Spencer’s day-to-day role, while his technical knowledge makes him the team’s go-to expert for troubleshooting and support.
His musical tastes are diverse, spanning everything from New Order and Sade to classical and jazz. Spencer is a true music connoisseur; it’s rare for him to hear a track he doesn’t already know.
One album he never tires of playing in our demo rooms is Moon Safari by Air. Its spacious production, delicate textures and effortless sense of flow make it the perfect test for a system, revealing whether it has the control, clarity and finesse required to earn a place in The Audio Room.
Jack at The Audio Room
In 2017, Darren and Spencer decided the team needed to grow and so recruited Jack. He helps customers select the systems that best match their needs and ensures they are set up perfectly in their homes. Since October 2023, he has been running our Leeds store, helping the people of West Yorkshire enjoy their best-ever hi-fi experience.
His musical tastes are diverse, spanning everything from The Notorious B.I.G. and 50 Cent to The Smiths. Jack’s go-to test album is Recomposed by Peter Gregson: Bach - The Cello Suites, a beautifully recorded reinterpretation of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.
Whether it’s the drive and rhythm of hip-hop or the intimacy of solo cello, Jack listens for honesty, balance and feeling in equal measure. Recomposed allows him to assess whether a system has the subtlety, clarity and musicality required to meet The Audio Room’s exacting audio standards.
